VTOL or vertical takeoff and landing, is different from a regular airplane since it does not need to use an airport to be able to fly. A VTOL plane can take you exactly to your point of destination from your point of origin because of its vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. This is different from a local flight where you have to go to an airport, then the plane will fly you to another airport, then you take a car to your real destination. The construction of VTOL is not as easy as a conventional winged plane. There are technicalities that make it difficult. Yet, it has many more advantages. Using VTOL planes will provide these advantages.
VTOL does not require an airport as most regular plane does, but there are more places that it can take off and land which does not need an airstrip. You don’t have to go to and from the airport which saves you much time and fuel. If you live in the US, it takes around 17 miles of travel to reach the nearest airport. But it will only take less than a mile to reach an area where a VTOL can land and takeoff. You don’t have to travel 17 miles if you take a VTOL plane.
VTOL planes are faster and more efficient than a regular aircraft. It is because of the use of the wigs that this is so. A large wing produces drag. With the increase in speed, drag increases. Friction on the wings causes more drag. The airplane then flies slower but it is burning more fuel. But VTOL wings are not used for takeoff and landing. They were designed strictly for speed and efficiency. Because VTOL components do not cause drag, you get a faster and more efficient plane.
It is during takeoff and landing that planes are at high risk of accidents. This is the most dangerous parts of a flight. The safest point in a plane ride is when the plane is cruising at high altitudes. The margin for error when the plane is close or rolling on the ground at high speeds is very low so any mistakes can be very dangerous. This is why takeoff and landings are very dangerous despite having vast space in airfields. Because VTOL plans take off and land vertically, these dangerous situations do not happen. The risk is reduced since a VTOL plane accelerates and decelerates in the air.
